Advancement

Experience Points
PCs advance by earning experience points (XP) to level up. Characters who survive an adventure receive XP awarded by the Judge. XP can be earned in four primary ways:

Recovering Treasure
Treasure recovered from the wilderness and dungeons is split between all party members at the end of an adventure. A PC earns 1 XP for every gold piece (gp) or 10 silver pieces (sp) of treasure recovered.

Defeating Monsters
Monsters defeated grant XP as determined by how tough and dangerous they are, at the following rates:

Outstanding Accomplishments
There may be occasions where victories and achievements of the party call for XP awards, per the Judge’s discretion. Generally, rewards of this nature come at the rate of 1 XP per PC per average party level for the challenge.

Leveling Up
When a PC earns enough XP, they ascend to the next level. A PC may not gain so much XP in a single adventure as to level up twice – only one level may be gained per adventure.

Each level, the PC gains a Hit Die of a type determined by their chosen class. Reroll all hit dice and total them up, then add the character’s CON. If this total is greater than their current Max HP, it becomes their new Max HP. Repeat this each time the PC levels up to determine if their Max HP increases.

Ability Score Change

Each time the character levels up, the player rolls for each ability to see if it increases.

  • Roll 1d20, and if the result is greater than the current score, increase the score by +1, up to a maximum score of 20. This indicates the PC has learned and grown in ability.
  • Update ability modifiers for score changes as needed.
